Gavin gave us all a very big scare when he stopped breathing at daycare. He is OK now, but here is the story.
They noticed that he had turned blue and immediately took action to get him breathing again. But somewhere in there he aspirated (breathed in his spit-up) and as a result continued to have difficulty breathing. At the hospital, they put him on a ventilator, and he was in the ICU for 5 days. Once on a ventilator, it was hard to get him off because they needed to keep him sedated. But they finally got him off, and the next day moved him out of ICU. This picture is taken on his first morning out of ICU. I came into his room to find the sun shining on him, most tubes removed, and him looking beautiful. It was such a relief.
There is no explanation about why he stopped breathing, though he was tested for almost anything that they thought it might be. It is a very scary thing, and now that he is home, we have a monitor to tell us if he stops breathing again. There is no reason to think it will happen again. The monitor is so that Mama and Daddy can sleep.
