Watering the Tree?

Here’s a video of Gavin with our new tree last week. I especially love the part about half-way through when he drinks from the hose! Scott was watering the tree one evening and Gavin just had to get in on the action. The amazing part was that he managed to only get his feet and hands muddy! Oh, and it was “Island Party Day” at daycare, so that explains the outfit. I don’t always dress him in flowers!

Gavin is changing so quicly right now. He is suddenly doing so many more things. He loves to imitate us, so if Daddy was watering the tree Gavin had to water the tree. He will finally wave when we wave. Until now he just didn’t want to do anything on command. When I was giving him “big hugs” and patting his back, he patted my back too! We raise our hands above our heads, so does he. It is much fun. He looks cute, we look silly! :-)

He can climb up his slide and sit with feet forward. (He still sticks to the slide, so needs me to lift his feet to slide down - long pants would solve that but it’s 90 degrees out!)

We think he is talking, but doesn’t have a lot of recognizable words. We count his first word as “Up” on June 30 when he wanted me to pick him up. Now he says something that sounds like “dog” when he points to either of the dogs. And imitates us when we speak, making the same sounds. I am naming everything that interests him to see what he will say. Still no “Mama” or “Dada” has passed his lips!

Oh, and he got 2 more teeth. The 6th in front and one molar!

He is moving up to the next room at daycare. Right now it is for a few hours every day until after the teacher’s vacation next week. He is definitely ready for the new room. More room to play, and more structure to the play. They sit in chairs (and are not strapped in), and on his first day when told to stay in the chair when he was about to go running off, he did. Luckly, he really loves chairs. He loves to sit in them and bounce against the back.

So many changes, and so much fun!

A Rude Awakening

Friday, July 18th, 2008

After Jane left this morning I started hearing this high-pitched beeping from upstairs (I often fall asleep on the basement couch.) I had no idea what it was, but since I was asleep I hoped it would stop. It did briefly, but I got up anyway and set my sights on the bed upstairs as a staging area until I woke up completely.

When I got upstairs the living room was filled with white smoke. That’ll wake ya up! I tore open my eyes and rolled them around until they were well lubed as I opened the back doors and called my dogs. They probably knew something was up because they didn’t take long. My neighbor Bo was in the back lane and told me that smoke was coming out of our house. I shouted something equally helpful like, “Yeah I know!” and went back in to see where it was coming from.

Nothing looked like it was on fire in the dining room so I went to the kitchen. Aha! There on the stove were two packages of smoldering bagels. My guess is that Gavin was able to turn one of the burner knobs and Jane didn’t notice (our morning exodus is barely contained chaos.) I filled the sink and dumped the bagels in there. There was one survivor bagel.

Lastly I opened up the doors and windows upstairs and turned on all of the fans (including the whole-house fan.) I saw Bo again out front and relayed that the situation was under control.

Tonight we’re installing knob guards on the stove.

Learning to Eat with a Spoon?

Gavin is starting to learn to eat with a spoon. We’ve mostly been giving him finger foods, but when I give him yogurt now, he gets a spoon that he dips in the food. And then he just licks the container!

If a tree falls in your front yard but you don’t hear it, did it really fall? I wish it hadn’t. Our beautiful Branford Pear tree, the largest and loveliest in the neighborhood didn’t survive this weeks thunderstorms. Monday evening the winds got it and knocked half of it over. Sad, sad day for our yard!
